One of the many things nobody will tell you about adulthood is that the older you grow, the more your diet reinvents itself because tell me why I’m just discovering that I’m allergic to gluten at 27, scratch that, 28.

How?

So what happened to all the gluten-containing food and snacks I’ve had from when I was a baby till when I discovered, what happened to them?

I know that medical and psychology expect will have explanations for it, but I honestly don’t care. I can’t eat pizza, pasta, bread, or anything that has wheat, rye and barley, I can’t eat anything that has slight contact with gluten because I’m allergic to gluten or I may have what they call Celiac disease.

My younger brother said it’s when you are rich, that’s when you start being allergic to meals you’ve been used to, I couldn’t agree with him less because even though I don’t have as much money as people think I have or as I think I should, I can still afford basic skincare routine like water and a clean towel.

Right from my childhood, I’ve been a picky eater, and my family members are already used to it.

With this new addition of avoiding gluten food or snacks, I should have been born in a foreign country where they pay close attention to people with allergies like me because how would I go to a restaurant and start asking for their gluten-free menu?

I can even go through the stress of checking packaged products but how will I tell the server at parties or events that I want gluten-free food? God abeg. 😂

The first time I had this breakdown was a few days after my birthday last year when we had pizza at the office. I almost died that night, as I was in severe pain plus I was stooling. Thankfully, I live with my parents, so my mum gave me first aid just so I could sleep that night.

By morning, I went to the hospital and I was asked to run some tests and was given some medications to relieve the pain and control the stool.

In November, I had pizza again and same experience and that was when my eyes cleared that I’m allergic to Pizza. I stayed clear from Pizza since then until a few days(weeks) ago when I had cinnamon rolls. How would I have known that cinnamon rolls had gluten? 😢

This episode was the craziest, I had a cinnamon roll and milkshake in the afternoon, got home, freshened up and set out for an overnight meeting in church. I was just a few minutes into the journey when I had that awkward moment when your tummy was troubled and goosebumps all over your body, drenched in your sweat.

The way I ran into the Burger King restaurant, you will think I was running away from my enemy. Well, that’s true, just that my enemy was “pooing on myself”. A few minutes later, I was relieved and still laughed out loud at my sister’s joke as I was on a call with her before the episode.

I finished my business and commenced my journey and that was where it started. Between 11 pm — 6 am, I had gone to the toilet about 5 times and you don’t want to know the content.

I eventually headed home, and guess where my first stop was, the gym because my body must bang. I went to the gym and spent about 30 minutes before the holy spirit whispered “Seek medical opinion”.

I obeyed and ended up being admitted for the first time in my adult life, thank God for HMO. The plan was to admit me for days but I convinced the doctor that I would rather spend the night at home and come in for my injections and drip. I got better and that was how my journey to avoiding pizza and its family members like a plague.

Adulthood is crazy!
