Homemade Meals
While eating lunch on Sunday, I reminisced on my love for homemade meals at home, and I thought, “That would make a good headline for my next story”, and here is it.
I woke up very early to prepare for church, though I ended up getting there 20 minutes late and parting with x3 of my fare all thanks to Mr Bolt. Service had started, and it lasted for about 5 hours. After all had been said and done, it was time to head home even though it was raining, my pocket-size umbrella came in handy.
On my way home, I was hoping there would be food at home because I live with my parents and my mum (God bless her heart) always looks forward to making us lunch on Sundays.
As I entered the keke Marwa that would take me down to the house, I decided to stop by a store to get my groceries for the month. Exhaustion and hunger set in, but I managed to get home after downing a can of Schweppes.
Got home and my mum did not disappoint, she had made a pot of yam porridge, and as I sat down my portion, it suddenly occurred to me how much I love eating homemade meals at home. I don’t know if I’m being sentimental but I just love the experience.
Aside from the fact that the food had a homely feel, I was not in a hurry to finish my meal because there was someone out there waiting to use my seat, and of course, I could ask for an extra serving without the waiter giving me a bad eye as if it’s not my money. 😂 😂
After the meal, I don’t have to start thinking of how to get home after satisfying my tastebuds and intestines.
If I had my way, I would have a homemade meal every day of my life, but unfortunately, I can’t have my way at least for now. It’s sweet to crave these things but the work that would go into it is a lot.
For example, I decided to make my lunch for 5 days straight. I was successful, but it required extra effort like asking my mum or brother to get me the ingredients I needed because I don’t get home till 7 pm. Even when I get home, I’m exhausted or tired from staring at my computer screen all day, but I’d still get up to blend the pepper or make the sauce for the next morning.
Yes, there’s the option of refrigerating them, but the fridge is faulty and that’s out of the options available.
I have to wake up earlier than my regular so I can have my devotion, make lunch and get to the office in time to start the day. Do I or will I still make homemade meals for my lunch? YES.
Why? The ROI is solid. I have access to fresh and healthy meals that satisfy my taste buds and my digestive system. I don’t like stale food except it’s refrigerated, don’t ask me why, I actually grew up like that. My parents didn’t raise me like that, in fact, I’m the only person who does that in the family.
I also have a sensitive digestive system that gets irritated easily by any rubbish food. The sad part is that you can’t tell whether a meal you did not cook will be rubbish or not, so I eat out when I can, and I also eat in when I can.
The lesson here is don’t be quick to judge people’s decisions/choices by your own lens. Yes, you may not be able to hear the story behind their decision, but you can keep an open mind and give them benefit of doubt.
