I’m working at a business center close to my house when I raised my head and caught sight of a young lady trying to set up a Gmail account for herself amidst other social media platforms.

Reminds me of myself some time in 2015 when I went to that same cafe with my elder brother to set up my Gmail account. That was the beginning of my frequent visit to the business cafe to browse the internet, especially my Facebook account. That was my most active social media back then, and a platform that was not complicated, unlike Twitter and others.

I would always save up my feeding allowance because I want to visit the cafe just to browse the internet, one hour was #100 back then, if I didn’t use up my time, I would go back some days after to use it. The money is for the use of the computer and internet connection. Interestingly, nobody taught me how to use a computer, maybe it’s my parent’s recessive genes😂 or just a blessing from Jesus my lord.

No, we didn’t have a computer at home at that time, and neither did we have neighbors who had computers in their house, but somehow I fell in love with computers and tech. I didn’t know if I stood a chance in the industry because I used to believe that tech was for “smart and intelligent people” and I didn’t fit into that category or that was what I was made to believe. Imagine my surprise when I realized that I didn’t really have to study computer science to have a chance in tech.

I remember while I was an undergraduate, I was walking down the road with a school mate and while conversing I made mention of a computer term, and the guy had to ask if I was studying computer science as that was the only reason why I could know that particular term. Well, I wasn’t, sadly I can’t remember the term but that incident stuck in my head.

Did I tell you that my parents wanted me to become a lawyer? Yes, that was what they wanted and naive me accepted and made that my dream. Look at me today, miles away from my dream, and a long distance away from what I studied for 4 years. In a few years from now, I will most likely journey away from where I am, and that’s how it should be.

We should be allowed to grow and evolve in all aspects. don’t tie people down based on your knowledge of them. Your knowledge does not mean that should be their reality. We should also stop guilt-tripping people for growing, it’s no fault of theirs that they grew up from what you used to know.

Don’t keep people in your imaginary box based on your assumption, for all I care they may be wrong and you may never get a chance to see them in the light of who they are.

Allow people to make mistakes as they evolve. Nobody has it all figured out, never forget to extend grace to people.

Cheers.
