Living and Growing
Obalende is one of my popular spots for generating ideas, I don’t know if it’s because of the throng of people, the numerous vehicles, or the fact that I have to trek a distance before getting a bus whenever I’m plying that route. I love how I can find seclusion even in an environment filled with distraction.
My first time plucking a mango was during my undergraduate days, I belonged to the set of people who resumed an academic session earlier than other students. I had a roommate, I’d call her Bimbo.
Bimbo was familiar with plucking mangoes but I was not as I’d never tried it before when she approached me and requested that we should go and pluck mangoes from the mango tree at the entrance of our Hall of Residence. I obliged and decided to try it, there is no harm in trying.
The tree wasn’t too far away from the ground, so it was easier for our arms to reach the fruits, we plucked as many as we could get. Unfortunately, the mangoes were unripe, so we couldn’t eat them the same day we plucked them. We ended up storing them in our respective lockers until they were ripe, which is how I became a mango harvester.
Everywhere I see a mango tree with fruits, I always have the urge to go ahead and harvest them, but because I don’t know the owner of the trees I withdraw and mind my business. 😂 😂
I learned a couple of lessons from this fun activity;
- Doing something for the first time doesn’t hurt, if you fail at it for the first time, try again till you become used to it.
- Collaboration helps you to grow, if you don’t know how to do it alone, don’t be afraid to ask people who have what you need.
- Don’t be afraid to try out something new, different, or unusual, especially when your conviction is giving you the go-ahead to get it done
- Avoid hoarding what you have from people around you who need it, the mangoes became ripe at the same time and almost got rotten, of course, we couldn’t eat everything the same day, but it could have been avoided if we had given some out to other people.
