Let’s talk about sacrifice

Living with my parents has taught me sacrifice. Forgoing the things I would have loved to do for the sake of my parents or my family members. We can also call it compromise.

See, if you live with your parents, you will agree with me that there’s no end to the errands. Nah, regardless of your age, you will always run errands for your family. If you don’t live with them, the errands might reduce, but the next time you show up, there’s suddenly a thousand things to do.

You can get so engrossed with running errands that you can’t seem to find time to attend to yourself, I mean sit to watch the TV, press your phone, munch on snacks, etc. This is the point where rebellion starts creeping in bit by bit.

But you see, the people you want to rebel against don’t understand that you’re an adult or gradually becoming one and as such, you will need a break or something close to it. Turning down errands with genuine reasons works faster than turning down and grumbling.

The day the holy spirit opened my eyes to seeing running errands as a service to my parents and family members, my grumbling stopped and I started looking forward to it. Our parents won’t be here forever, and I would definitely not be with them for so long, so why not do what I can at the moment?

As I pointed out earlier, running errands can be draining, but here’s what I did.

  1. I politely turned down errands.
  2. I accept the errands, but on the condition of doing it at my convenience especially when they are not life-threatening.
  3. I do the ones I can do when I’m available, so I have a track record of running errands on time when I turn down the other ones.

You can’t tell your parents not to send you on errands, but you can control how many of the errands you run as long as you’re living under their roof.

Again, living with your parents as a financially independent adult is not a crime and it’s not a big deal.

How do you escape errands when living with your parents? I would appreciate your response in the comment section.
